Warning signs

How do I know if my child has dyslexia?

Dyslexia affects around 5 to 10% of school-age children and has nothing to do with intelligence or effort. These signs, taken together, are worth a calm assessment — with no need for alarm.

  • Swaps or reverses letters and syllables when reading or writing.
  • Confuses similar-looking letters (b/d, p/q).
  • Reads slowly, with effort, and avoids reading aloud.
  • Struggles to memorise times tables, days of the week or sequences.
  • Tires quickly during homework and becomes frustrated.
  • Strong spoken expression, but written work below what's expected.

“We have walked alongside Dr. Ana Silva for 6 years. We arrived at the Dyslexia Centre (me in denial) and, after some tests, came the diagnosis: dyslexia. At a severe level. Our son was finishing Year 2 and read far less than his classmates. They were six years in which a partnership became a friendship, in which we felt someone was walking beside us towards inclusion and towards knowledge about a subject still so little understood (and so heavily stigmatised).

There was someone who always believed in our son and who not only taught him to look at this trait without fear, but also prepared him for the world, giving him the confidence and the tools to grow — untroubled by noise and stares, with this magical light that only he has and with which he beams at us, happy, every single day.

With our son's diagnosis we gained all of this, and for all of this we will be forever grateful!”

E.M. Mother of a child with severe dyslexia

“I came to Dr. Celeste's Clinic in 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, with a possible and cold diagnosis of dyslexia and ADHD for my son João, aged 6.

On arriving at the Clinic, I found a multidisciplinary team that, in a very professional and clear way, quickly assessed João, without ever losing the human warmth the situation called for.

Together with the family and with the school João began attending, a work plan was drawn up and put into practice, always adapted to my son's needs.

From a diagnosis of dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia — all severe — to João's integration into the school system, it was a long road, but a joyful one, full of small victories. To see my son's smile and his eagerness to learn, to see his self-esteem restored, within a clinic that today I can say is part of our family, was wonderful.

I will always be grateful to Dr. Celeste and the whole team at the Clinic, who helped us overcome the difficulties and break down taboos.”

“As worried parents, we were looking for answers and help for the difficulties our daughter showed at school, which were spilling over into family life. At the Clínica de Dislexia Dra. Celeste Vieira, our daughter was finally diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD and properly referred to a qualified team that has been helping her — and helping us. The support, the care and the availability of these professionals have been important for everyone.”

“Hi! My name is Henrique Leite and I'm a Year 12 student. Some time ago I was lucky enough to attend Dr. Celeste Vieira's clinic, and I'm lucky to say it changed my life completely.

When I started, I had difficulties with reading and, above all, I hated reading. It was here that I was diagnosed with severe dyslexia. On top of that, I had problems with speech and writing. As a result, my self-esteem was weakened! I believed I had been made only for numbers and had steered my academic path towards that area. But that was before…

After attending the clinic everything changed, thanks to the help of the excellent professionals, in particular Dr. Ana. I found my passion for philosophy and I read — not out of obligation, but for pleasure!

The old Henrique would never have imagined saying something like this; nonetheless, I can only be grateful for the change. If I could, the only thing I would change would be starting the sessions earlier — who knows what other differences they might have brought to my life.”

Henrique Leite Former student, 17 years old (Year 12)

“My time at the dyslexia clinic had a positive impact, both on my understanding of words and on my sense of responsibility.

At first, I thought learning would last only a short while, but in the end I made a huge journey of four and a quarter years, since I started before going into Year 1. I thought it was a waste of time, but over these four years I felt there was great progress in my reading and writing.

But I didn't make this journey alone — I made it with a dedicated team! I had a wonderful tutor, a teacher, a therapist and a family. I would have achieved nothing if I had given up at the start. I knew it would be hard, but that it would be worth it.

Because of the clinic, I managed to become one of the best. I overcame my difficulties in Portuguese and English and learned to deal with my mistakes and find ways to reduce them. My next journey is Year 5, but I will always remember the team that helped me get this far.”

Pedro Former student, 10 years old
Frequently asked questions

Answers to your questions

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty, of neurological origin, characterised by difficulties with the accuracy and/or fluency of word reading and by weak spelling skills.

There are several warning signs, such as difficulty learning to read, slow reading with errors, and difficulty with writing. We recommend a specialist assessment for an accurate diagnosis.

Dyslexia is not an illness, so it has no "cure". However, with the right intervention it is possible to improve reading and writing skills significantly.

Although some signs can be identified earlier, a formal diagnosis is generally made from age 7–8, once the child has had formal exposure to reading instruction.

Yes, dyslexia is a lifelong condition. Many adults were not diagnosed in childhood and benefit from assessment and intervention even in adulthood.

Intervention is based on systematic phonological training, using scientifically proven methods such as the Phonomimic Method. Sessions are individualised and adapted to each person's needs.

The length depends on the severity of the difficulties and the response to intervention. Typically, several months of regular, consistent work are needed.
